Assateague Island, a stunning destination on the Maryland coast, boasts both a state park and the Assateague National Seashore, offering an array of activities for families. The park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including the famous wild ponies that roam free on the beaches and in the marshes. In our experience, it’s less about rushing from attraction to attraction and more about slowing down, exploring, and letting kids experience nature in a hands-on way. Here are some of our favorite things to do on the island:
Seeing the Wild Horses
One of the biggest highlights of Assateague is seeing the wild horses. You can spot them:
- on the beach
- near the marshes
- along the roads inside the park
We had the best luck driving slowly around the island and watching for them grazing or walking near the dunes.
It’s important to remember that they are wild animals. Visitors should stay at least 40 feet away (about the length of a bus). Even though they may seem calm, they are not tame and should not be approached or fed.
Beach Time (Simple but a Favorite)
The beaches here are beautiful, wide, and much less commercial than nearby Ocean City.
We did notice the waves were a bit stronger here, so our kids spent more time playing in the sand than in the water.
The beach was also much less crowded than nearby Ocean City during our visit, which gave the kids plenty of room to run, play, and explore without feeling packed in.
Some of our favorite beach activities included:
- building sandcastles
- collecting seashells along the shoreline
- watching the waves (and letting the kids dig and explore)
- looking for mole crabs in the surf
The mole crabs were something our kids were fascinated by. They are harmless and they do not bite, pinch, or scratch. I’m not sure if this is the norm for this area, but handfuls of these little creatures were dragged over our feet with every wave that crashed. Our children enjoyed catching them in their sifter and releasing them on the wet sand to watch them scoot and bury themselves.
Ranger Programs (One of the Best Parts of the Trip)
The ranger-led programs really stood out to us and are worth planning around if you can.
We did several activities, including:
Clamming Program
We learned how to find clams and used tools provided by the rangers. (And yes — you can also find them just by reaching into the mud!)
Crabbing Program
This was another favorite. The ranger taught us about crabs, regulations, and then helped us catch our own right from the dock.
Junior Ranger Program
This is great for kids of all ages. You can pick up an activity booklet at the visitor center, complete it during your visit, and earn a badge at the end. The booklet contains lots of educational information and the badge is a great free souvenir.
Other Things to Do Around the Island
If you have more time, there are several other activities available:
- nature walks along designated trails
- birdwatching throughout the island
- fishing (surf or bay fishing)
- kayaking or canoeing in the calm waters
- biking along paved paths
- camping on the Maryland side of the island
- stargazing or evening beach walks
- visiting the visitor center to learn more about the ecosystem
These are great additions if you’re turning your visit into a full day or weekend trip.

- Bring bug spray, especially in the evening.
- Arrive early for the best chance to see wild horses.
